Strategy Time: Advertising on Social Media

Social Media advertising is a very important tool for every business to utilize in today’s technology driven world. Using social media for advertising is less expensive than using more traditional routes of advertising such as television, newspaper or print. Social media is also a great way to reach a larger portion of your target audience which in turn, leads to more conversions (visiting customers turn into paying customers).

The most important part of advertising on social media is to truly understand the differences between the social media networks and the purpose that each of them serve. Below are some tips and tricks for making the most of advertising on social media.

1. Customize your Approach for Each Platform

Each platform on social media is different in its function and purpose. An overall strategy should be mapped out for your approach to social media and then the strategy should be adapted to fit that specific social platform. Research can be an important tool to learn these differences if you’re unfamiliar with a platform.

2. Copy is King

To succeed in social media, it’s crucial to throw out as much content as possible about any topic to try to attract customers… right? Wrong. It’s more important how you use the limited amount of characters or words to convey a message. Take the time to think through what messages would impact your audience the most.

3. Visuals Play a Huge Purpose

Most of the engagement from your audience will be driven through images. Researchers found that colored visuals increase people’s willingness to read a piece of content by 80%.  Take the time to create your own visuals which many include photography, graphics, illustrations, infographics or videos. Make sure that these visuals are consistent with your brand image.

4. Target your Audience

As I stated before, social media is a great way to reach a larger portion of those who would be interested in your product or service. Social media makes it simple to target those audiences. As you go through the process to create a campaign, each platform will allow you to choose an audience based on specific demographics.

5. Try, and Try again

Every business is different in terms of the specific goals and audiences that each is trying to reach. There is not a single method that will work for every business. This means that it’s important to test out and see what works for your specific business. For example, test different versions of an advertisement and figure out what sticks with an audience and what doesn’t. This can be validated with the statistics provided by a platform when a campaign is initiated.

These tips serve as a base to get you started. Try to sit down and utilize each one to help grow your social media advertising strategy.
